Yiddish Schmooze: Der Nister – A Yiddish Writer in Post-War USSR

November 1, 2018 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Yiddish Writer (3)

Join us to discuss the life and works of major Soviet Yiddish writer Der Nister (The Hidden One), the pseudonym of Pinkhes Kahanovich, 1884-1950. Born in the Ukraine, his body of work includes extensive portrayals of Jewish life in the inter-war period. During WWII, he was a member of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee and published writings that exposed the German persecution, torture, and ultimate destruction of the Eastern European Jewish community. In 1949, he was arrested in Stalin’s purge of Jewish writers, and he died in a Soviet prison in 1950. It was said of Der Nister, that “had writers of the whole world been given a chance to read his work, they would have broken their pens.” This schmooze will highlight his symbolic and highly intellectual prose and poetry. This event is in Yiddish, for advanced Yiddish speakers.

Ber Kotlerman is Associate Professor of Yiddish Studies in the Dept. of Literature of the Jewish People at Bar-Ilan University in Israel, and is one of our Yiddish instructors.
