ARTIVIST SPOTLIGHT – MATT LITWACK

As a native New Yorker, mural artist, and educator with a background in anthropology I have always wished to be able to bring mural art to small, rural communities throughout the US.  The idea became a reality this past summer as I traveled to Mahnomen, Minnesota, a small town situated on the White Earth Reservation. with a population of 1,200 about 45 minutes from Fargo, North Dakota.

Partnering with local educators, as well as a group of incredible young artists, we learned about Native floral plants as well as basket weaving techniques that have been a vital part of the local tribe’s history for centuries. The students then helped design and paint a wonderful full-scale mural on main street in downtown Mahnomen and brought the community together in an experience that we will all remember for years to come.

“I hope to continue and grow this program bringing mural art to small cities and towns throughout America while uniting communities and educating youth about the local histories of the places they call home.”
