ACTIVIST SPOTLIGHT: CURTIS SYLVESTER

Hi, I’m Curtis Sylvester, and I’ve lived most of my life in New York City. When I retired from a finance career about three years ago, I wanted to continue to be active and productive. I had never been much of an activist, but I wanted to try things that were different from what I’ve done before, things that would also make a difference to other people.

I’m proud to participate with the Workers Circle in several of their sponsored activities. The Workers Circle gives me an opportunity to live my values and resist the growing inequality and intolerance around us. In my Democracy Circle, to my own surprise, I’m becoming an activist that partners with others to fight voter suppression. We assist voters in vote suppressed states to surmount barriers to cast their ballot. Our Democracy Circle plans, shares and discusses ideas, and encourages all of us to do more. Through the Workers Circle, I participate in postcard writing and phone banking programs that help voters of color access information they need to participate in elections.

Democracy is government by the people. It is up to us to defend democracy. The Workers Circle provides the supportive environment, tools, and relationships to do this. If you haven’t already done so, give the Workers Circle activities a try. I think you’ll be glad you did!

The Workers Circle will be resuming phone banking in April. Keep an eye out!
