Senator Humphrey’s Outline for the 85th Congress

Check out Senator Hubert Humphrey’s (MN) version of “A New Congress: A New Beginning” from the January 1957 edition of The Call. He summarizes the main priorities of the 85th Congress which convened on January 3, 1957. In the “Civil Rights” section, he calls for the abolition of the filibuster.
The filibuster continues to be, in the words of President Obama, “a Jim Crow relic,” so we won’t stop until this racist rule is relegated to the dustbin of history! As the 118th Congress opens on January 3, 2023 the Workers Circle will fight for voting rights and demand a truly multiracial, multicultural democracy where we realize worker rights, immigrant rights, and racial justice for all!
