(New York) - Ann Toback, Executive Director of the Workers Circle issued the following statement regarding the New York State Senate passage of the Green Light NY bill, which will permit undocumented individuals to obtain driver’s licenses:

“We applaud Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris and bill sponsor Senator Luis Sepulveda for their leadership and commitment on this issue that today resulted in the New York State Senate passing Green Light NY!

“We urge and are confident the Governor will sign this crucial piece of legislation into law as he has so frequently pledged he will do.

“The Workers Circle is proud to be a strong and active participant in this campaign. We are thrilled to be standing on the shoulders of our own immigrant founders, fighting to protect today’s immigrant community.

“If signed into law by the Governor, over 750,000 undocumented residents in New York will be able to drive to work, take their children to school and to the doctor, buy groceries for their families, all without fear that a traffic stop could result in family separation and deportation.

“For all New Yorkers, safety will increase on the roads, millions of additional dollars will go into city and state budgets as well as the overall New York State economy. And most importantly, the people and legislators of New York have done the morally and ethically just thing. We have all lived up to our promise to protect and support our vibrant and precious immigrant community!”
