The Workers Circle Urges Senate to Swiftly Pass the ‘For the People Act’
(NEW YORK) — Ann Toback, CEO of the Workers Circle, has issued the following statement in response to the introduction of the ‘For the People Act’ in the Senate:
“The Workers Circle applauds the introduction of S. 1, the ‘For the People Act,’ an urgently needed, comprehensive voter reform package that will move us closer to becoming a truly multiracial, inclusive democracy. Passage of this bill will end voter suppression, get big money out of politics, and halt racial and partisan gerrymandering – practices that have and continue to silence millions of voters and skew representation. This bill will establish election safeguards and ethics rules that are essential to restoring faith in our government.
Since February 2021, in 43 states, more than 250 bills that would restrict voting access have been introduced and are moving forward rapidly. Our Congress and federal government cannot claim to be protecting our democracy while simultaneously standing by as the majority of our states actively undermine citizens’ right to vote. The ‘For The People Act’ would answer these shameful state bills, two of which have already passed, by expanding voting access and creating a national baseline of voting rights upon which every American can depend.
The Workers Circle thanks Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Rules Committee Chairwoman Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) for their leadership on this bill. We will continue to strenuously advocate for the Senate’s swift passage of the ‘For the People Act’ because democracy can’t wait.”
