The Workers Circle and Women’s Suffrage
During the 1914 national convention in Hartford, Connecticut, the Workers Circle endorsed the women’s suffrage movement.
Emily Pierson, a labor activist and suffragist from Hartford, served as the special guest speaker. Pierson stated that the wealthy oppose “equal suffrage because they want to give to charity. But charity is not what the working man and woman are looking for. They want only a fair chance to gain a living.”
She also stated: “We do hereby solemnly protest against the active opposition of those women of leisure who persist in obstructing the efforts of working women to obtain full citizenship thereby making the struggle for the protection of the working people’s homes immeasurably more difficult."
