Course Goals:Yiddish literature before Mendele, Sholem Aleichem, and Peretz was a product of writers who wanted, through Yiddish, to affect broader sections of the population. Galicia, Ukraine, Lithuania, Belorussia were the territories where individuals were published during their lifetimes or after their death and became ideological guides who brought new ideologies and aesthetic concepts in Jewish life. Secular literature spread and played a significant role in the history of the Yiddish language and culture, and the art of the Yiddish word began a new chapter in Jewish life.
Course Tools: We will read work by Yosef Perl, Yisroel Oksenfeld, Shlomo Etinger, Avrom Ber Gotlober, Nokhem Meyer Shaykevich and by poets Mikhl Gordon and Eliakum Zunser
