Advanced with Avrom Lichtenbaum: Yoseph Opatoshu – Periods of Jewish Life: Monday 6:30 – 8:00 PM: Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25, Dec. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Monday 6:30 – 8:00 PM: Oct. 28, Nov. 4, 11, 18, 25, Dec. 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
Course Goals: We will read A Tog in Regnsburg, which described the Jewish Middle Ages in Opatoshu's eyes, and Elye Bokher, which is a historical reconstruction of Jewish life in Venice in the Renaissance period. The works have enriched our literature with a new chapter – a product of his hours-long research, not only in Jewish libraries, and we will analyze his scientific discipline and accurate reading of the Jewish past. We will analyze Opatoshu's contribution as a story-teller, as a linguist, and as a historian.
Course Tools: Students will get a glossary of loshen-koydesh terms and localisms, and a list of topics to which they will have to refer, especially regarding the historical periods that Opatoshu analyzes.
