The course will explore various ideas of building a modern Yiddish-speaking community, including (1) the projects of building an autonomous territory in Australia and Latin America, (2) an attempt to develop a non-territorial autonomy in Ukraine, and (3) an experiment of giving a state status to Yiddish in Belorussia. Special attention will be paid to the Jewish Autonomous Region, established in the Russian Far East 90 years ago, and to the five Jewish districts in pre-World War II Soviet Union.
