Dos goldene land: Songs of Immigration and the Second Avenue Yiddish Theater with Cindy Paley (Mini-Course): Thursday 4:00 – 5:30 PM: Nov. 14, 21, Dec. 5, 12, 19
Thursday 4:00 – 5:30 PM: Nov. 14, 21, Dec. 5, 12, 19
Dos Goldene Land (The Golden Land) promised prosperity and freedom and thus took on mythic proportions in the minds of the Jewish masses. Their dreams and struggles in America, as well as nostalgia for the old country, were brought to life in Yiddish theatre and literature. We’ll begin with these Yiddish songs of immigrant pain and joy and then learn the great songs of the American Yiddish musical theatre. We’ll listen to recordings and sing songs by Boris Tomashevsky, Molly Picon, Aaron Lebedeff, and the great composers - Alexander Olshanetsky, Abraham Ellstein, Joseph Rumsinsky, Sholom Secunda and others. Sheet music and lyrics in transliteration with English translations are provided. Lomir zingen!
