"Blondzhende Shtern" (Straying Stars) -- That's what Sholem-Aleichem called the novel (1912) where he described the lives of those in the Yiddish theater community of his time. I paraphrase Sholem Aleichem's title for this course, because it includes work from those performers (including those in the world of Yiddish music) who also expressed themselves in writing. Esther-Rokhl Kaminski (1870-1925), Boaz Young (1870-1955), or Avrom Morevski (1868-1964), among others, left interesting memoirs from their lifetime on the Yiddish stage; Yankef Mestel (1884-1958), actor and director, wrote about the connection between literature and theater, Zevulun Kwartin, the famous cantor (1878-1954), and Joseph Rumshinsky, the theater composer (1881-1956), also offered a quality portrait of their artistic lives. From their writings, we get a fascinating picture of personalities, time periods, places, problems, and pathways in the development of the Yiddish performative arts.
