Course Goals: A.M. Vaysenberg was a restless personality who exalted the poor man and portrayed him as an aristocrat fighting for his rights. A student of Perets, Vaysenberg brought in a new tone to Yiddish literature. With his pen, he made fun of intellectualism and created masterpieces with delightful prose that described the tragedy of Jewish life and extolled the shtraytn (struggle) of honest men and women.
Course Tools: We will read Der bal-tshuve; A pomnik; Di bobeshis ophitn; Khanele, A mayse mit a gneyve; A shlekhte froy; and chapters of A shtetl.
