Express Yourself with Yiddish Dance with Steven Weintraub (mini-course)
Tuesday 1:00 – 2:30 PM: Feb. 25, Mar. 4, 11, 18, 25
Yiddish dance refers to Jewish dancing done to klezmer music. And, like the music, Yiddish dance can express a wide range of emotions and experiences. The dance can be celebratory, wistful, tender or bold, angry or peaceful, to name just a few possible moods. Yiddish dance can work well on Zoom because it is not necessary to hold hands and go in a circle, rather there are forms that can be done solo, or as a group like a line dance facing the camera and couple dances that don’t require touching, just facing your partner and responding to their movements.
In these classes, we will learn a vocabulary of movements that are typically Yiddish and Yiddish dance forms like the Frelekhs, Khosidl, and Zhok, that you can learn and make your own. We will learn a few choreographies, such as musical etudes, and dance patterns, and then when they are familiar with the syntax of Yiddish dance, students will have the opportunity for free self-expression.
