Intermediate – Advanced with Annie Cohen: Gina Medem, the Yiddish pasionaria
Monday 12:30 – 2:00 PM ET: Feb. 24, Mar. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Apr. 7, 28, May 5, 12

Course Goals: In this class we will be reading the second volume of Yiddish journalist and Communist activist Gina Medem's memoirs, following her travels across the world in the 1930s. Through Medem's highly political reporting, we will read about Jewish life and anti-fascist leftist politics in Palestine, South Africa, England, France, Birobidzhan and the USSR, Civil War Spain, and even Nazi Germany. Taught by Annie Cohen, a researcher of the Communist movement who is working on a translation of Medem's memoirs, this class will provide background context to the events under discussion using materials from the Yiddish press and archival sources. The class will be taught mostly in Yiddish but slowly, with explanations and switching to English when needed. English translations of many of the texts will be provided. This is a continuation of a class taught in the fall semester, but new students are very welcome — no prior knowledge is necessary.

Course Tools: All materials will be provided by the instructor.
