from $310.00

Intermediate – Advanced with Annie Cohen: Zi hot nisht gedreyt keyn redl. Zi hot nor gedreyt mit der tsung: Gabetes, zogerkes and other women religious leaders in Jewish Eastern Europe.
Monday 3:00 — 4:30 PM: Feb. 24, Mar. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Apr. 7, 28, May 5, 12

In this class, we will read texts about the women who served their communities as professional ritualists and religious functionaries. Looking at a variety of sources, we will compare the portrayal of these women in Yiddish literature — such as in the above quote from Isaac Meir Dik — with accounts documenting real women from Yizker Bikher, memoirs, and ethnographic studies. A continuation of last semester, this semester we will be looking mainly, but not only, at the women who led prayer, ritual, and lament in the cemeteries of Eastern Europe — the zogerkes, feldmesterins, and klogerins.
Designed for intermediate to advanced students, the class will be conducted mostly in Yiddish, but in English when needed and English translations of the texts will be made available to students. As well as discussing the content, we will also pay attention to new vocabulary and grammar. All materials will be provided by the instructor.
