(NEW YORK) - In response to the introduction of The Freedom to Vote Act by Senator Klobuchar on September 14, 2021, the Workers Circle’s CEO Ann Toback released the following statement:

“The true test of our democracy is whether every citizen has the freedom to vote. The Freedom to Vote Act will set national standards to ensure that every American has the ability to cast their vote freely and have it counted. Importantly, this bill has the power to stop state voter suppression laws in their tracks and correct partisan, racial gerrymandering. This bill, together with the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, will deliver a fundamentally more fair electoral and voting process and step us closer to realizing the promise of democracy for all.

“Time is of the essence. Congressional maps are already being drawn by states and more than half of our states have passed laws that make it harder for eligible Americans to vote. We call on the Senate to not let the filibuster stand in the way of swiftly passing the Freedom to Vote Act. We urge President Biden to use the full power of his office to get this legislation over the finish line. Our democracy can’t wait.”
